Maglev Train

Shanghai Transrapid is the first commercial high-speed maglev line in the world. The system and trains were built to the Transrapid standard. Construction began in March 2001, and public service commenced on 1 January 2004. The Shanghai Maglev Train line runs from Longyang Road station in Pudong, on the Shanghai subway line 2 to Pudong International Airport. The journey takes 7 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the distance of 30 km on the Shanghai Magnetic Levitation Demonstration Operation Line. A train can reach 350 km/h (220 mph) in 2 minutes, with the maximum normal operation speed of 431 km/h (268 mph) reached thereafter. During a test run on 12 November 2006, a maglev vehicle achieved a Chinese record speed of 501 km/h (311 mph).

Farewell dinner: Housed on the third floor of an old Tudor mansion, this luxurious dinner spot in west Shanghai, popular with the well-heeled Hongqiao set, has to be seen to be believed. The cavernous, incense-scented loft is littered with antique Chinese and Asian furniture, from large Buddha statues and silk wallpapers to Ming Dynasty tables and chairs, all the result of the designer's travels through Asia. It was here the group bid farewell to Tony Du, our famous tour guide and wished two group members, Chantay and Elizabeth *HAPPY BIRTHDAY*

CEIBS

The China European International Business School was established in on November 8, 1994 in Shanghai; with offices in Beijing and Shenzhen. CEIBS is a not-for-profit joint venture established under an agreement between MOFTEC and the European Commission.

During the lecture presented by Cladia Schafer, Deputy Director Dean's Office, we were informed of a brief history of CEIBS, why Shanghai is the place to be, the future problems of China (education, health and pollution) and lastly we were provided some basic guidelines on China and the Chinese Culture hierarchy. Afterwards all the students from Kean University Global MBA and Executive MBA programs enjoyed networking with the students from CEIBS.

China's MBA Rankings 2009

According to the Financial Times, the China European International Business School (CEIBS) ranked number 8 this year and remains one of the top ten business schools over the last three years. The average alumni salary three years after graduation 137,030 (US$). CEIBS is a product of a 1985 agreement between the EU and the Chinese government.

Exchange Programs

Motivated by a desire for international understanding, Chinese exchange students realize that a global education is important to their success especially in today's job market. Most recently, the students were featured in a blog during their studies at Kean's College of Business in 2008.

Also, Kean University is the first American University in China with a campus now located in the city of Wenzhou. Previously, Wenzhou officials attended the US University and earned Master degrees in Public Administration; consequently they rose in government positions.

The gaokao entrance exam, comparable to the SAT, is the most important factor in determining who gets into the best schools. Last year 10 million chinese senior high school students registered to compete for an estimated 5.7 university seats. The gaokao is offered annually.

Projects 985 and 211

Project 985, conducted by the government of the People's Republic of China, is a constructive project for founding world-class universities in the 21st century. In 1998, President Zemin declared that "China must have a number of first-rate universities of international advanced level", and that's when Project 985 began.

In the initial phase, nine universities were given grants in excess of CNY1,000,000,000 each, over a period of 3 years. The second phase, launched in 2004, expanded the program until it has now reached almost 40 universities. Many participating universities receive tens of millions of yuan each year. A large part of the funding goes to academic exchange, allowing Chinese academics to participate in conferences abroad, and bringing foreign lecturers to China. Participating universities devote at least 15% of project funds to humanities projects and for institutions focused on science and technology, five percent.

Project 211 was initiated in 1995 by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. This project aims at cultivating high-level elite for national economic and social development strategies. Project 211 schools are responsible for training 4/5 of doctoral students, 2/3 of graduate students, 1/2 of students abroad and 1/3 of undergraduates.

The Chinese government has its own limitations to fund higher education opening up the private sector. Therfore, China welcomes and encourages private and foreign investment. During the first phase of the project from 1996 to 2000, approximately US$2.2 billion was distributed. Also, during the first phase of project 211, China allocated 2.755 billion yuan in special funds; in the second phase 6 billion yuan, and for the project's third phase (2007-2011) of construction, the Ministry set aside 10 billion yuan.

The Foreign Higher Education Market in China
